The Heart Behind Funk's Learning Lab

Hello – and welcome to my website for Funk’s Learning Lab Tutoring & Teaching Center, thank you for your interest! I would be honored to have the opportunity to earn your trust in tutoring your child. My goal is to help your student fall in love with learning and succeed academically.

My name is Skylar Funk. I was born and raised in Texas, educated in private Christian school K-12, then obtained my Bachelors and Masters in Education, plus numerous certifications in Special Education,  Elementary Education and Educational Leadership. I attended Lamar University (Beaumont), Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches), and West Texas A&TM (Canyon). I am a certified teacher in both Texas and Oklahoma.

I started my public-school teaching career in Amarillo as an elementary educator, and spent ten years in the classroom. After obtaining my Masters, I primarily worked in rural schools in west Texas, eventually becoming a principal and curriculum director.

I have an experience-rich background in addition to teaching. I’ve known since high school I wanted to be a teacher, but I’ve also spent time doing other things. I worked for a bail bond company and managed a children’s clothing store to earn a living during college. I’ve spent time in the jungles of Ecuador doing missionary work with Hope House, a mission for homeless girls rescued from abuse. One of my most challenging work experiences was being tasked by my Superintendent to take on the role of both administrator and facilitator for the start-up and opening of two residential treatment schools in our district. One for all girls, one for girls and boys, these facilities provided and met the district’s alternative education needs.

Aside from teaching, I enjoy travel adventures with my husband Coy, spending time with my dog Mila, hiking, crocheting, and my other side-hustle Disco Dough Bakery.

After nearly a decade and a half in the public school system, you may wonder why I have decided to open a tutoring and teaching business?

It’s simple. I determined I wanted to return to my first love – working with children in more of a hands-on, one-on-one approach to learning. So much of education has become a “one way to think – one way to teach” atmosphere, where curriculums switch, policies change, and even with excellent teachers - some children fall through the proverbial crack.

My tutoring methods instill the natural love children have in searching for the “why”, where your child is encouraged to think critically to solve problems, and allowed to have productive struggle to reach a goal. Raising confidence, as well as potential, is my primary focus. My business, Funk’s Learning Lab, builds a bridge to excelling academically with individualized tutoring and teaching based on your child’s needs. I use deep-dive cognitive assessments, project-based learning, play-based strategies, brain-training activities, creative-outlet pods, and a few good, old fashion teaching tricks to motivate my students. Whether you have a 3rd grader who is academically struggling, or a burnt-out gifted junior high student….I’m here to help you and your child.

I chose Fairview as the location for my business because I wanted to help my local community. I recently moved to Oklahoma because I’m newly married, and my husband lives in Ames. If you want to hear a Hallmark, movie-worthy love story of how a boy from Ames, OK (population 187) randomly crossed paths with girl in Paint Rock, TX(population 241), ask me!

That’s a whole ‘nother adventure! In closing, I’d be happy to answer your questions, set up a consultation and assessment, then begin the process of journeying your child to his or her needed goals. Please call me to set up an appointment. 806-523-6344. Happy learning ahead!

Sincerely, Skylar Funk, Owner
